Edition: 4 September 2026 · Category: BIM News

This is an archived English edition. The briefing below preserves the original episode’s reporting and analysis, with paragraph headings added for reading. Words such as “today”, “planned” and “upcoming” refer to the edition date, not the website publication date. Product status, prices and deadlines should be checked again before a new decision.

The edition’s main signal is that Autodesk is linking structured BIM data access to product subscriptions and measured API consumption. AEC Data Model API pricing takes effect on October 6. BIM automation architecture must therefore manage not only models and permissions, but also Autodesk team structure, usage limits, and cost.

News item one

AEC Data Model API pricing takes effect on October 6, 2026.

Fact. On September 3, Autodesk announced that pricing for AEC Data Model APIs will begin on October 6. Limited access for exploration and prototyping remains available through the APS Free tier. Usage beyond that tier will require either a qualifying Autodesk product subscription with included API capacity or an active paid APS offering. Autodesk also says future API pricing changes will be communicated at least 90 days in advance.

Why it matters. A production BIM dashboard, quality check, or portfolio analysis may now have an additional business-continuity and budget dependency. Before October 6, inventory every AEC Data Model query, including its volume, frequency, owner, and operational importance.

News item two

Included API capacity will be tied to qualifying subscriptions.

Fact. A qualifying product subscription will provide a monthly allowance for AEC Data Model API usage. Allowances from multiple subscriptions accumulate and are pooled at the Autodesk team level. Autodesk gives several examples: one Forma Build subscription includes 100 megabytes per month, Forma Build Essentials includes 25 megabytes, and Forma for Construction Operations includes 350 megabytes. These examples are not universal limits for every product.

Why it matters. The license portfolio becomes part of API capacity planning. For education, this is a useful example of cloud automation having an operational and economic layer, not only a technical one. The recommended action is to verify the official allowance for each subscription and forecast monthly demand instead of extrapolating from a single example.

News item three

The Developer Hub, applications, and qualifying subscriptions must be in the same Autodesk team.

Fact. Included capacity is available only when the APS Developer Hub and its applications are in the same Autodesk team where the qualifying product subscriptions are assigned. Capacity is shared across that team. When resources are split, Autodesk suggests merging teams or moving subscriptions.

Why it matters for a BIM manager. A working integration may fail to use capacity the organization has already paid for simply because the administrative topology is wrong. That is not a model error, but it can interrupt an automated process just as effectively.

Action. Create a clear map covering the Autodesk team, subscription, Developer Hub, application, owner, and environment. Keep test and production applications distinct, while verifying which team and allowance each application actually uses.

News item four

Consumption above the included amount will require Flex or Pay as You Go.

Fact. Usage beyond the allowance can continue through Prepay with Flex or Pay as You Go. Autodesk warns that a workflow can be interrupted when it has neither an eligible product subscription nor an active paid APS offering. An Enterprise Business Agreement does not automatically provide included capacity if the organization has not purchased an eligible product subscription.

Why it matters. An API allowance becomes an operational reliability risk, similar to authentication failure or rate limiting. The fact that an integration works today does not guarantee that it will continue after reaching a monthly threshold.

Action. Add usage monitoring, budget alerts, query caching, and a safe degradation path. A critical report should move into a clearly labelled read-only or last-approved-version mode rather than silently returning incomplete data.

News item five

Granular access makes it unnecessary to load an entire Revit model for every task.

Fact. AEC Data Model APIs can query BIM object parameters in the cloud. In Autodesk's example, the Snowdon Towers Revit model is 90 megabytes. Retrieving all door information requires 1.55 megabytes, while all window information totals 1.12 megabytes. These are results from one specific sample, not a general compression or performance guarantee.

Why it matters. Quality checks, reporting tools, and artificial intelligence agents can receive only the information needed for a specific task. This may reduce data transfer, network demand, and processing. However, a small response does not prove that the correct model, version, category, filter, or unit was selected.

Action. Choose one read-only pilot, such as checking door identifiers and required parameters. Compare the API result with a Revit schedule or another deterministic output. Record the source model, its version, the query, and measurement units.

News item six

Autodesk's AU program explicitly connects trusted data with reliable artificial intelligence.

Fact. On September 3, Autodesk announced that a September 17 Autodesk University session will present the AEC Data Roadmap and the vision for Forma's data strategy. The stated themes include creating, accessing, connecting, automating, and reusing granular data; consistent requirements; validation; and maintaining information integrity from design through construction and operations. A September 15 discussion will examine why more data does not automatically mean better data. Demonstrations will cover the AEC Data Model, Autodesk Datum, Content Catalog, and Model Analytics.

Interpretation. Autodesk's artificial intelligence direction increasingly depends on a governed data layer rather than merely sending files to a language model. However, a roadmap session describes strategy and emerging capabilities. It does not guarantee that every demonstrated feature is already available for production.

Action. After Autodesk University, classify each announcement as a production feature, preview, demonstration, or long-term vision. In education, use this material to show why the quality of an artificial intelligence answer begins with structured, consistent, and validated source data.

News item seven

Archicad 28.3.3 fixes Teamwork and documentation defects.

Fact. On September 2, Graphisoft released the Archicad 28.3.3 hotfix. It fixes Keynote labels being replaced in a Teamwork project without reserving the element, a crash when entering custom text in a door schedule, partially clipped file dialogs, and stray macOS windows that could block the interface. The package updates Archicad and installed Graphisoft add-ons and Goodies, while BIMcloud requires a separate update package.

Why it matters. The Teamwork reservation defect affects change control. The separate BIMcloud package also means workstation and server versions must not be treated as a single update state. Action: test Teamwork reservation, door schedules, and critical add-ons with a pilot group first, and record Archicad and BIMcloud status separately in the deployment log.

Analysis and practical implications

Daily analysis. BIM API pricing becomes part of information architecture.

Until now, it was easy to evaluate an AEC Data Model pilot mainly as a technical exercise: can a GraphQL query find the required elements and parameters? From October 6, the production chain has more explicit dependencies. A product subscription is assigned to an Autodesk team. That team is linked to a Developer Hub, the hub contains an application, the application consumes an API allowance, and only then does the query return a BIM result.

The biggest opportunity is granular access. It can support lighter quality checks, dashboards, portfolio analysis, and artificial intelligence tools without downloading an entire Revit file. Smaller payloads may reduce latency and unnecessary information transfer.

The main risks are organizational and semantic. An incorrect team structure can prevent the use of capacity that has already been purchased. An uncontrolled query can consume the allowance. A cache can return a stale version. A small response does not prove the correct scope, units, or model version. A product subscription and API entitlement also do not replace project data permissions or ISO 19650 responsibility.

Concrete actions before October 6. First, inventory all AEC Data Model applications and their owners. Second, verify alignment between the Autodesk team, Developer Hub, and subscriptions. Third, measure a representative week's query volume and forecast the month. Fourth, add caching, limits, alerts, and an emergency read-only mode. Fifth, record the project, model and version identifier, filter, units, and time in every output. Sixth, validate results against a Revit schedule, an IFC and IDS check, or another trustworthy baseline. Seventh, distinguish the technical API administrator, information owner, and budget owner.

For teaching, give students the same Revit model and ask them to design the smallest API query for a door quality check, estimate the transferred data volume, validate the result, and document access and cost risks.

The edition’s signal: cloud BIM integration maturity will now be demonstrated not only by a correct API answer, but also by proven data provenance, permissions, team topology, consumption control, and operational continuity.
