Onshape Lesson 1: Create and Resize a Precise Plate
Learning outcome
Create a precise 100 × 30 mm plate in Onshape. Extrude it to 3 mm, then edit the same feature to 5 mm while preserving the sketch dimensions and one solid.
Before you start
Beginner lesson · English. Use a practice Onshape document with millimetre units. This lesson uses genuine Onshape screen recordings with AI-assisted English narration and illustrated presenters, Edgaras and Eve.
Step-by-step guide
1. Open a Part Studio and start a sketch on the Top plane.
2. Draw a corner rectangle with one corner coincident with the origin. Dimension it to 100 × 30 mm.
3. Finish the sketch. Extrude its closed region with Solid, New and Blind, at a depth of 3 mm.
4. Check one solid and an expected volume of 9,000 mm³.
5. Edit the same extrusion and change its depth from 3 to 5 mm. Do not add another extrusion.
6. Check the final 100 × 30 × 5 mm dimensions, one solid and 15,000 mm³ volume.
Try it yourself
Rebuild the plate in your own Part Studio, then repeat the thickness change without redrawing the rectangle. Preserve a version of each checkpoint in your practice document.
Check your result
The final blank plate measures 100 × 30 × 5 mm, with one solid and a volume of 15,000 mm³. The sketch controls length and width; the existing extrusion controls thickness. View orientation does not change the dimensions.
Common mistakes
If the sketch moves unexpectedly, inspect its constraints. If Extrude fails, check that the selected region is closed. Check millimetre units and the depth value if the volume is incorrect.
