Onshape Lesson 2: Locate, Cut and Resize a Through Hole

Learning outcome

Add a precisely located through hole to the 100 × 30 × 5 mm plate. Change the diameter from 6 to 8 mm by editing the same circle sketch while preserving both 15 mm offsets.

Before you start

Beginner lesson · English. Complete Lesson 1 or recreate its final plate in your own Onshape Part Studio. Use millimetre units. This lesson uses genuine Onshape screen recordings with AI-assisted English narration and illustrated presenters, Edgaras and Eve.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Select the broad top face of the 5 mm plate and start a sketch. Draw a circle near one short end.

  2. Dimension the circle to a diameter of 6 mm.

  3. Locate its centre 15 mm from the short end and 15 mm from a long side. Check both location dimensions and the diameter.

  4. Finish the sketch. Extrude the circular region with Remove and Through all. Check that the preview cuts through the plate.

  5. Confirm one solid and a complete 6 mm through hole. Expected volume: approximately 14,858.628 mm³.

  6. Edit the existing circle sketch. Change only the diameter from 6 to 8 mm, preserving both 15 mm offsets. Let the same removal feature update.

  7. Confirm one solid, an 8 mm diameter hole through the full 5 mm thickness, and unchanged 15 mm offsets.

Try it yourself

Build the hole in your own practice document, preserve a 6 mm checkpoint, then resize the same sketch to 8 mm. Do not create a second circle or a second cut.

Check your result

The plate remains 100 × 30 × 5 mm with one solid. The final hole is 8 mm in diameter, 15 mm from the short end and 15 mm from either long side. Expected final volume: approximately 14,748.673 mm³.

Common mistakes

Use Remove, not New, and ensure the cut direction intersects the plate. Diameter is twice the radius: an 8 mm diameter means a 4 mm radius. The hole is near one short end, not halfway along the 100 mm length.
